Chiari Awareness Day
David Moseley, 31, of Carlsbad, NM is one of many who suffers from syringomyelia (SM) which was caused by his Chiari malformation.
SM, a chronic spinal cord disorder, disrupts the flow of spinal fluid. Then, that fluid is forced into the spinal cord, which causes a syrinx cavity. This can lead to painful or disabling symptoms.
Chiari malformation is the most common cause of SM. The brain tissue actually extends into the spinal canal. This could be due to different types of skull shapes pressing on the brain and forcing it down.
Other causes include injury, tumor, meningitis, or tethered spinal cord. It affects one in every thousand individuals.
