How to Keep Calm and Carry On if Our Machines Go Down
As a medical imaging center, we’re always at risk of technical difficulty. The two things our center counts the most on are our machines and the people on our staff, and like anything else, neither are infallible. We can’t always predict when people will be taken ill or when our machines decide they’d like a rest.
Emergencies can happen. They happen when you least expect them to. That’s why they’re called emergencies…otherwise they’d just be “strategically planned for mishaps”, and to be frank that doesn’t really flow right. One morning our machine could break down, our staff could all call out sick, or our roof could cave in. Who knows!
We try to be prepared for anything, especially for technological difficulties, since that’s a huge part of our field. Although we may have a plan for how to react when emergency situations like this happen, our patients don’t. So in the unlikely event that one of our machines breaks down and is out of commission, we’ve developed some guidelines and tips for things that patients can do on their end to help make everything easier, both on themselves and on us!
Step 1) Stay calm. If you show up for your appointment and you’re greeted by a somewhat flustered receptionist who informs you that the machine is broken, don’t freak out. This doesn’t mean that the machines are dangerous and frequently self-destruct, and there’s no reason that something like this should make you nervous about having your procedure done down the line. Our scanners are machines, and like anything else are subject to technical difficulties occasionally.
Step 2) Make sure to gather all the information. If something like this comes up, we’ll try to inform our patients as soon as we possibly can, whether it’s through Facebook, in person, or by phone. Our staff should be able to provide you with all the relevant details and walk you through what’s going to happen next, but if you feel like there’s something else you need to know then don’t hesitate to ask—we’re here to help!
Step 3) Understand the rescheduling process. If you’re one of the people whose appointment is affected due to a malfunction, then there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that you don’t have to have your procedure that day, so get out there and do something spontaneous! The bad news is that you’ll have to do it a different day. Our staff should be able to walk you through the rescheduling process, and can coordinate with surrounding facilities to try to get you in for a procedure as soon as possible.
Step 4) Don’t forget to laugh about it. Stuff happens, plans change, and life goes on. One of the most important things to remember is that even when a situation is unexpected and throws a wrench in your plan, something good always comes out of it. Whether it’s a funny story that you share over dinner, a friendship that you forge while sitting in the waiting room, or simply a kind exchange with a staff member who just needs some encouragement, if you look hard enough you can always take something good away from a bad situation.
